28+ min ago (821+ words) But an equine virus outbreak this year has loomed over one of the world's most prestigious rodeos and the threat was apparent from the start: Riders walked out during the grand entry on foot. Their horses were safely kept away with strict health precautions in place. Other riders weren't able to bring their own horses to the event at all. The equine herpesvirus 1, or EHV-1, has made its rounds in the past. But the outbreak was of particular concern this year, with cases in the U.S. on the rise as it coincided with the 10-day event that ends Saturday and draws thousands of horses and their riders. Minton builds up roping career to NFR level
13+ hour, 57+ min ago (1108+ words) The probability that Brushton Minton was going to be involved in rodeo was high. What that looked like took some time to sort itself out. His father, Casey, was a regional PRCA competitor for years, winning the Linderman Award in 1993. That accolade honors a PRCA cowboy who earns at least $1,000 in three events during the season, with at least one in roughstock events and one in timed events. Minton's grandfather, Rex, was an accomplished roughstock rider during his career. Like his elders, Minton eased into the bucking chutes as a kid. Unlike his family members, roughstock competition didn't suit him. "I rode steers in high school and juniors, and got on some junior bulls, but I didn't like it," Minton said with a laugh. "I was actually really good at it, but I just did not crave getting on it....

He had no permanent partner and was trying to figure out what was next. Paul Eaves was gracious enough to rope with Summers at some of the bigger winter events. But Eaves wasn't looking to do much competing later in the season. With the rest of 2025 looming, Summers faced a lot of uncertainty. He talked to other heelers about forming a partnership, but was hesitant to commit. And then, his phone vibrated with the message he had long hoped for....
Some make NFR a year-after-year Vegas experience
14+ hour, 6+ min ago (1129+ words) Statler Wright first made the NFR in 2024, but the 22-year-old has been at the Thomas Mack nearly every year of his life, giving him a unique view of how far the Finals have come. Statler Wright first qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2024. He's back this year, qualifying once again in what's ostensibly the family business: saddle bronc riding. But the 22-year-old has been to the Thomas &Mack Center more than twice in his life. In fact, he's been on hand at the Wrangler NFR almost since birth. "I've been here every year for 22 years. I was born in September 2003, and I was in Vegas in December of 2003. That was the first year my dad made the Finals," Wright said. Indeed, Cody Wright " a two-time world champion in saddle broncs and a PRCA Hall of Famer " rode in…...
